The Federal Employers Liability Act, or FELA, is a law that provides protections for railroad workers who are injured on the job. Under FELA, railroad workers are entitled to receive compensation for their injuries, and they can also sue their employers if they feel that their rights have been violated.
FELA was passed in 1908 in response to a series of devastating rail accidents that killed or injured thousands of workers. Prior to FELA, there was no legal recourse for injured workers, and they were often left to fend for themselves. FELA changed all that by giving workers the right to seek damages from their employers.
Since its passage, FELA has been amended several times to further protect the rights of railroad workers. For example, the law now requires employers to provide a safe working environment for their employees.
If an employer fails to do so and an employee is injured as a result, the employer can be held liable under FELA.
